A FROCK OF CARDS
This Award winning frock, made completely of Avant Card postcards, had heads turning and scratching! Year 11 high school student, Renee Clark, was a State finalist for WA at the Apex Australia Teenage Fashion Awards with her unique, funky frock. Made with an eclectic mix of Avant Card postcards, Renee’s dress design and construction was a stand-out. Renee’s idea came through finding Avant Cards at a local cinema. Her dress design was to ‘reflect how mass media advertising influences our lives’.
Renee’s story
Renee Clark is a 16 year old, year 11 student at Kingsway Christian College. This was Renee’s second year of entry and first time at the State Final of the Apex Western Australia Teenage Fashion Awards.
Renee entered her postcard dress in the Fantasy category where entrants are able to express themselves creatively, and are not so much judged on their sewing skills.
Renee was the only one of 26 entries from her school to get through to the finals in 2007. Renee’s school also ran their own talent show with all the Apex entrants. A panel of independent judges chose Renee as the winner in her category.
A keen art and drama student, Renee aspires to attend Notre Dame University, Fremantle. She would like to study law and journalism. She is keen to participate in a student exchange program…but mum is not so keen. Renee is an active member of the City of Wanneroo’s Youth Advisory Council.
Renee’s funky postcard dress is
modelled by Alison Nicoli.
About the Awards
The Apex Australia Teenage Fashion Awards (AATFA) has been an annual event for the past 17 years. In conjunction with secondary schools throughout Australia, Apex provides students with the opportunity to design, manufacture and model their own fashion garments. There are 3 categories in the competition: evening wear, day wear and fantasy. Renee’s design was a stand out in the fantasy category.
AATFA is a unique opportunity for students interested in the fashion or design industries to demonstrate their skill and flair through a friendly competition. The Awards are an extraordinary co-curricular activity, which offer students the opportunity and encouragement to explore their creativity in the fields of fashion, design and textiles.
To some participants AATFA is a boost to their confidence and self-esteem, and provides inspiration and the chance to grow. To others, it has been a stepping-stone into the world of fashion and design.
Entrants must be a teenage high school student, see: www.aatfa.org.au
